Is Astrology the Devil's Work?

And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years. - Genesis 14
I once met a born-again Christian woman who sternly informed me astrology was the work of the devil. I was twenty-eight at the time. I wanted to ask her if that was before or after the three wise men predicted the birth of Christ using astrology. Of course I reconsidered my rebut and kept silent instead. After all who am I to claim to know with unequivocal certainty otherwise? Still, I was curious. Later that night I reread Genesis 14 and wondered. What exactly did the scriptures mean, "let them be for signs?"
Long before I ever read the bible I sat in a rented canoe on the middle of the lake, fishing rod in hand, in stupid reverence of the bright orange full moon in the sky. It was late summer. I was 15 years old. It was the first time I ever witnessed a bright orange full moon. I stared at the moon and wondered. Why is it orange? Is a bright orange moon more or less significant than a regular full moon? What caused the moon to turn orange? Will it be orange next month? And why wasn't it orange last month? Will it be orange again this time next year?
I've witnessed many bright orange full moons since turning 15. In fact, I've seen red moons, pearly white moons, yellow moons, gray moons and no moons. And as for signs - well - I now realize had I of been with a seasoned fisherman I might have been told it was not a good night for catching fish. Had I of been with a farmer I might have been told it was the ideal time to harvest potatoes and other root vegetables. Had I of been at the hairdresser's I might have been told that if I cut my hair it would grow back slowly. Had I of been with a mid-wife I might have been told I was prime for ovulation, menstruation and pregnancy. And, of course, had I of been with an astrologer I might have been told the message of the moon was as diverse as the twelve houses and signs of the zodiac in which it resided.
It's been 16 years since I first met that born again Christian lady and heard her utter those contemptuous words. Yet in spite of reading the scriptures from cover-to-cover I can neither confirm nor deny her charge. Still, I'm hopeful the moon is more than just a chunk of round rock that orbits the Earth every 29.5 days measuring time. Call me a spiritual romantic but I'd like to think God is more mysterious than that.
