Songs for You, Truths for Me : Album Review

For anyone living outside of the UK, you could be forgiven for not having heard the amazing vocal ability of this young talented musician. His first album, Undiscovered proved a massive hit selling more than 2 million copies and going 4 times Platinum in the UK. Songs from the album were used in hit American TV shows such as Grey’s Anatomy and Ugly Betty gaining him some exposure across the Atlantic. Now with the release of his second album he will he hoping to break into the American market, and by collaborating with the likes of Nelly Furtado he may well have a chance.

As most musicians will tell you, the second album is the hardest. You have to decide whether to change your style and sound or do you stick with what has made you so popular. James Morrison has clearly stuck to what he does best, and that is deliver some truly amazing vocals which highlight his unique voice. He plays guitar and has co wrote every track on the album proving his talent as a singer/songwriter, but will it be successful?

His style is somewhat hard to pinpoint, he has a soulful, smoky quality to his voice that would have seen him in his element during the 70’s. This is none clearer than on the track ‘You Make It Real’, beautifully written with smooth vocals that any soul sensation would be proud of. The same can be said for ‘Love is Hard’ and ‘If you don’t wanna love me’. Unfortunately mixed in with these are a few tracks that are far more pop orientated such as ‘Nothing ever hurts like you’, with its big production sound just doesn’t quite fit in with his normal soul style.

Perhaps the track, which will be given most attention, is ‘Broken Strings’, a duet with Nelly Furtado that will showcase his vocal talent. Performing with anyone as big as Ms. Furtado will no doubt get him credit alone but the track itself is a success and will be certain to do well in the singles chart.

Overall this is another superb album delivering soulful music that will no doubt put a smile on your face. If you were already a fan of James Morrison then this is a must buy, but if you are hearing him for the first time you will definitely want to hear more.
