7 Songs You Need To Hear This Fall
By: Jason Rayner
As we retire the summer and transition into fall, there are many important things to consider. We must say goodbye to T-shirts and shorts and move into warmer clothing. For some of us, we must say goodbye to the freedom of having time off and must return to the grind of the school year. However, most importantly, it's time to christen a new bunch of songs. Yes, this summer everyone admitted they kissed a girl and they liked it. Except now, we're over it. After much consideration and deliberation, here is a list of seven fresh and exciting songs to help you transition into the fall.
“Lost!” by Coldplay
At the moment, it is *****near impossible to go anywhere without hearing Coldplay's current hit “Viva La Vida”, the title track off their current disc. For fear of getting over exposed to their current catchy success, “Lost!” is the perfect alternative. With a shaky beat, relatable lyrics and Chris Martin's delicate voice, “Lost!” packs an everlasting punch. For those times when you need some good background music, or for whenever you are looking for a good musical companionship, “Lost!” encompasses Coldplay at their best.
“Hummingbird” by Born Ruffians
Why aren't the Born Ruffians the biggest name in Canadian rock at the moment? This trio, who released their first full length album “Red, Yellow and Blue” in March are currently making headlines in the Toronto indie world. “Hummingbird” is the perfect introduction to this extremely vibrant band. With a fast, danceable beat, and a fun video to go along with it, “Hummingbird” has everything needed to be a fall time party anthem.
“Spotlight” by Jennifer Hudson
Everyone knows Jennifer Hudson as the A-List Oscar winning actress. However, Hudson would have never made it as an actress if she had not proven herself as an extremely gifted songstress. Although Hudson seems somewhat out of place on this list, the song is a perfect example of what a good pop song should have. This mid tempo ballad has a very catchy chorus, a solid beat and plenty of Hudson's signature vocal gymnastics. While most pop songs focus almost entirely on production and image, “Spotlight” is one of the few songs that focus on the raw talent of the artist.
“Boyz” by M.I.A.
For those who are so over M.I.A.'s “Paper Planes” (another song currently with strong radio presence), “Boyz” will ensure that you don't quite write off this extremely talented performer. From her absolutely fabulous 2007 album “Kala”, “Boyz” is signature M.I.A. From the intense, pulsating beats, to the sing along melody (complete with a chorus of Na-Na-Na's), “Boyz” is a fun, dance romp that will grab the attention of everyone at any party.
“Electric Feel” by MGMT
Surrounded by a flurry of hipster buzz, MGMT could be one of the few bands capable of breaking the musical drought. The twosome, who just played Toronto's V Fest have a very solid album with “Oracular Spectacular”. “Electric Feel” encompasses the vibe of this band's sound. The song is sexy, catchy and has a funky rhythm that leaves you hitting the repeat button once the song comes to a close. This is the perfect song for any occasion, and has an excellent remix by Justice to accompany it.
“Sandcastle Disco” by Solange
This pick might be even more controversial than Jennifer Hudson. Some of you might have absolutely no idea who Solange is. Some of you might know her as Beyonce's younger sister. However, on her just released album, Solange proves that music is in her family's blood. The track is a total throwback to the old school sounds of the 1960s. With breezy vocals, a sing along inspired chorus and a Motown groove, “Sandcastle Disco” is one of the coolest tracks of the season.
“Fascination” by Alphabeat
This Danish import is destined to conquer North America. Alphabeat is the perfect mix of sing along dance, pop and rock and “Fascination” is them at their best. With the male-female duet style provided by lead singers Anders SG and Stine Bramsen, “Fascination” is a fun, flirtatious ditty about falling in love. Breezy and cute, this may be one of the catchiest dance songs in recent memory. Almost guaranteed to have anyone hooked upon first listen.
