Sean Penn to lobby for California to adopt a Harvey Milk Day

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS 2009-03-02 16:28:00

SAN FRANCISCO - Fresh from his best actor Oscar for his performance as gay leader Harvey Milk, Sean Penn is pushing California to officially recognize the late politician's birthday.

State Senator Mark Leno plans to reintroduce a bill Tuesday with Penn by his side designating Milk's birthday a "day of significance."

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger vetoed the same bill last year.

In his veto message, the governor said Milk should be honoured in San Francisco, where he was a city supervisor, but not statewide.

Leno says Penn's award shows that Schwarzenegger's argument about Milk being only of local interest no longer holds up.
