Are We Ready?

Funny thing, I was watching an episode of “Good Times” some of you readers may be a little young to remember this seventies sitcom. Quick synopsis, father and mother both uneducated living in the world’s largest housing project (low-income housing) in the heart of Chicago. They have three children, two boys and one girl. The oldest son, an aspiring artist who claims he is a ladies man but take one look at him, quite the opposite. Then there’s Michael, the youngest son wants to grow up to be a lawyer. Michel has the “Black Power Movement” attitude. The daughter’s name is Thelma, the smart pretty girl that wants to grow up to be a doctor. The episode I watched was “The Investigation”, where Michael talks about how far Blacks have come, there’s Black Mayors, Black Judges and so on. He says, maybe one day we might have a Black President. That episode is over thirty years ago. Now the question that people are pondering, is America ready for a Black President? I asked myself this question, am I ready? Is it really a big deal? Or is it “the media” hyping up Mr. Obama’s pigmentation? Is it a legitimate question to ask? Are people still hung up on race that they would not vote for a candidate because their pigmentation is “too dark”? On the other hand, is it wrong for people of color to vote for Mr. Obama just because he is part Black? Are we as Americans that closed minded that we can’t legitimately and honestly look beyond Mr. Obama’s color and look on what he stands for? If the answer is no, then it will be another 30 years that will past still pondering the same old question, Is America ready for a Black President? Are you? Am I?
Thought of the day:
Hold fast to dreams, for if dreams die, life is a broken winged bird that cannot fly.
Langston Hughes
