Yesterday, the Polish people celebrated the 90th anniversary of regaining independence. It has been a historic and joyous day for many Poles, allowing them to celebrate the disbandment of Austro-Hungary, and once more, the creation of the Polish State.
It has all started in in 1792, when Poland was being partitioned by the Russian and Prussian empires. In 1794, the third and final partition of the country was carried out, erasing the country from the map. In 1795, eastern part of Poland was seized by Russia, whils the western areas took by the Prussian state. Although there has been initial displeasement in among other countries, Europes attention was turned towards the French Revolution.
Finally in 1918 during the Armistace, the 'Polish Question' was discussed. Although intial remarks have been made by the Italian government, US President Woodrow Wilson drew up his famous ' 14 Points' by which he proposed how to sort out post-war Europe; The Polish matter was under the 13th Point which stated: An independent Polish State should be erected which would include the territories inhabited by indisputably Polish populations, which would be assured a free and secure access to the sea, and whose political and economic independence and territorial integrity should e guaranteed by international covenant.
All of Poland celebrated their independence yesterday, including the President Lech Kaczynski who said, "Today is a day of joy...ninenty years ago, after 123 years of captivity and annexation, Poland emerged anew".
In November The Nationa Bank of Poland issued gold coins to commemorate the 90th Anniversary.
