The Politics & Economics of Disaster

petermat50 2010-06-15 02:57:13

In the daily comment I publish elsewhere, I am forced to keep returning to this issue, because The Man refuses to let it go.
Let's just be clear about one thing, the future of BP depends (in my opinion)
not on justice, not on a fair assessment of compensation due to
discharge their responsibilities for the accident, but on;
politics, stopping the oil flow before the US midterm elections
(or face vitriol that will make the current nonsense look like
a congratulations card) and the desire of a wounded President
for a populist crusade to enhance his own image. Anadarko,
Haliburton, Transocean and other US companies deeply involved
are all to be granted amnesty without even a trial or an investigation. One final, and very personal, comment on the subject (for now). My own feeling, and it is, I stress, purely a personal reaction is- How dare he invoke 9/11 in any way as a comparison for this situation? HOW DARE HE? The rally which had the Dow over 100pts up at one point yesterday petered out in the afternoon and left shares little changed. European futures seem to be showing small negatives for the opening over here today. CDX also failed to consolidate a bright opening, but did close nearly 2bp tighter. Toyota the main new issue news last night, raising $2 billion in 5 and 10 yr area. A variety of data on prices, confidence and housing both sides of the Atlantic today- but hard to imagine there will be any headline grabbers amongst them. Tomorrow we leave behind oil company politics and will return to global economic concerns such as the cheery news our little Emerald Isle will be nearly £1.4bn in debt within 5 years.. that's nearly £25,000 for every man woman and child amongst us (aassuming we haven't all emigrated by then). Happy Tuesday everyone- at least there's Brazil to watch!
